We present a novel methodology for the asymmetric synthesis of beta-mercaptolactones via isomerization of omega-hydroxy-alpha,beta- unsaturated thioesters by means of a bifunctional aminothiourea catalyst. The catalyst interacts with the substrate through the cooperative action of both a covalent bond at the amino group and noncovalent bonding at the thiourea group. The potential for an enantiodivergent synthesis could also be demonstrated by carrying out the reaction in a different solvent system.

Phosphoramides and thiophosphoramides were prepared from optically pure C2-symmetric 1,2-diamines and were used as chiral organocatalysts in the asymmetric Michael additions of aldehydes and ketones to N-substituted maleimides. The 1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-diamine derived thiophosphoramide, which could be prepared in good yield in a one-step procedure, was found to be more active and selective catalyst in the addition of aldehydes to various maleimide derivatives, when compared to sulfonamides having the same backbone. Products resulted in reactions of ketones with maleimides were also obtained in high yields and enantioselectivities. The thiophosphoramide derivative was also efficient in the asymmetric conjugate addition of carbonyl compounds to beta-nitrostyrene and in the reaction of nitromethane with alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Based on results obtained with (thio)phosphoramides in asymmetric additions to maleimides it was suggested that a weaker, more flexible hydrogen-bonding of the rigid electrophile to the catalyst is responsible for the improved performance of these bifunctional organocatalysts, as compared with sulfonamides. Two new oxazolines (3 and 4) and their copper complexes (5 and 6) were synthesized. The four compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and 1H-NMR, IR, MS spectrometry. The molecular structure of compound 6 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The four coordinate atoms [N(1), N(2), O(2), O(4)] and the central metal atom (Cu) form a saddle configuration. Compounds 5 and 6 were found to be moderately effective in the catalytic asymmetric Baeyer-Villiger reaction of 2-phenylcyclohexanone.

We have designed and synthesized a series of organic wide bandgap materials, namely DCzSiCz, DDCzSi and DTCzSi, by incorporating carbazole/oligocarbazoles via a silicon-bridged linkage mode. All the materials show good thermal stability and excellent solution-processibility. Their HOMOs and LUMOs could be tuned to facilitate the efficient carriers injection by the incorporated carbazole/oligocarbazoles, while their singlet and triplet energy levels still maintain high levels, all above 3.44 eV and 2.87 eV, respectively. High efficient blue electrophosphorescent devices with low turn-on voltage are realized using DCzSiCz, DDCzSi and DTCzSi as hosts for FIrpic through solution-processable method. Among them, DCzSiCz-based device demonstrates the best performance, showing a maximum brightness of 6600 cd m-2 at 11 V and maximum luminous efficiency of 8.40 cd A-1 at 5 V.

A similar reaction with dibenzo-18-crown-6 (3) produces cation [Cb*Co(eta6-C6H4(OCH2CH 2OCH2CH2O)2C6H 4)]+ (4). Arene exchange is reversible, and both 1 and 3 can be regenerated by irradiation of 2 and 4 with excess benzene. The reaction of [Cb*Co(C6H6)]+ with 0.5 equiv of 3 gives dinuclear complex [trans-Cb*Co(mu-eta6, eta6-C6H4(OCH2CH 2OCH2CH2O)2C6H 4)CoCb*]2+ (5). The structures of cations 4 and 5 were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical behavior of complexes prepared was studied. The sodium-binding ability of cobalt complexes 2,4, and 5 (determined by NMR titration; Ka = 2500, 800, and 50, respectively) was found to be much smaller than that of the free crown ethers 1 and 3 (K a, -200 000 and 5 000 000). DFT calculations suggest that this decrease is mainly due to electrostatic repulsion of Co+ and Na + centers.

Novel ferrocene modified P,N-ligands (R,R,Sp)-8 and (S,S,Sp)-9 were synthesized conveniently from enantiopure cyclohexanediamine and (Sp)-2-phosphinoferrocenyl carboxylic acid. They were used as chiral ligands for palladium-catalyzed allylic substitutions of rac-1, 3-diphenylprop-2-enyl acetate with dimethylmalonate and benzylamine. (R,R,Sp)-8 was found to be a better ligand containing matched chiralities (central chirality and planar chirality) and showed a higher enantioselectivity.

The determination of the stoichiometric ratio in the molecular association system is of great signification. The asynchronous orthogonal sample design scheme a Job’s (AOSDaJob’s) method, which was developed in our previous work, had a considerable advantage over the commonly-used Job’s method. However, the AOSDaJob’s method might give incorrect results due to the severe interference of the noise from the spectral measurements. In this paper, a modified AOSDaJob’s (MAOSDaJob’s) method was proposed by introducing the modified reference spectrum into the AOSDaJob’s method. Firstly, mathematical analysis suggested that the MAOSDaJob’s method might be more robust to noise compared with the AOSDaJob’s method. Then, the results of computer simulation showed that the stoichiometric ratios obtained from the MAOSDaJob’s method were all consistent with the set values under the disturbance of noise. However, AOSDaJob’s method produced incorrect stoichiometric ratios in the computer simulation experiments due to the interference of noise. Lastly, the MAOSDaJob’s method was successfully applied on two real chemical systems.
