A systematic study both in the solid- and solution-state, was carried out for a series of sodium magnesiates containing the utility amide ligand 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyldisilazide (HMDS). The first complex considered is the donor-free bisamido monoalkyl polymeric complex [Na(mu-HMDS)2Mg(nBu)]?1. The reactivity of 1 with common tertiary bidentate donors including N,N,N?,N?-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) or its chiral relative (1R,2R)-tetramethylcyclohexyldiamine [(R,R)-TMCDA] is detailed. Surprisingly, the products of these reactions are not simple diamine adducts but are solvent separated sodium magnesiate systems [(TMEDA)2·Na]+[Mg(HMDS)3]-2 and [{(R,R)-TMCDA}2·Na]+[Mg(HMDS)3]-3. By concentrating on the likely equilibria which may give rise to formation of 2, a potential intermediate complexed ion pair [{(TMEDA)2·Na}(mu-nBu)Mg(HMDS)2] 4 was isolated. Additionally, the novel “inverse magnesiates” [{Na(mu-HMDS)}2Mg(mu-nBu)2·(TMEDA)]?5 and [{Na(mu-HMDS)}2Mg(mu-nBu)2·{(R,R)-TMCDA}]?6, were obtained by reacting solutions of composition “NaMg(HMDS)(nBu)2” (a likely by-product in the formation of 2 from 1), with TMEDA or (R,R)-TMCDA. The structure and nature of these bimetallic complexes have been determined using a combination of X-ray crystallographic studies and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract The complexation reactions between K+, Na+, and La3+ cations and the macrocyclic ligand dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) were studied in acetionitrile (AN)-dimethylformamide (DMF) binary mixtures. Also, the complexation of K+ and Na+ in 50% ethanol (EtOH)-50% DMF and 50% EtOH-50% AN binary mixtures was studied. The conductivity data show that the stochiometry of all the complexes is 1: 1. A non-linear behavior was observed for the log K f variation vs. composition of binary solvent, which was discussed in terms of heteroselective solvation and solvent-solvent interactions in binary solutions. It was found that the stability order of the complexes changes with composition of the mixed solvents. The stability sequence for AN-DMF (25 and 50 mol % DMF) solutions and pure AN at 25C is [K(DB18C6)]+ > [Na(DB18C6)]+ > [La(DB18C6)]3+. However, at 75 mol % DMF it changes to [Na(DB18C6)]+ > [K(DB18C6)]+ > [La(DB18C6)]3+. The thermodynamical values (DeltaHcpo, DeltaScpo) for these complexation reactions were determined from the temperature dependence of the stability constants. The thermodynamics of the complexation reactions is affected by the nature and composition of the mixed solvents.

A catalytic route for enantioselective synthesis of homoallyl amines through Cu(II)-Schiff base catalyzed reaction of allyltin with aryl, alkenyl-substituted N-sulfonylimines is described. The allylation reaction is promoted by a simple in situ generated Cu(II )-amino alcohol based Schiff base complex. The addition of allyltin to aldimines delivers the desired products up to 90% yield and 98% enantiomeric excess (ee). Based on experimental observations a probable mechanism was proposed for this reaction. The current methodology was extended to the synthesis of b-phenylalanine in good yield and very good enantioselectivity.
