A new diphosphine ligand system, derivative of (2-hydroxyphenyl) diphenylphosphine and assembled on the cyclotriphosphazene platform was analyzed. Structural analysis of complexes showed the ligands versatile coordination chemistry, capable of monodentate, linear bidentate and cis-bidentate chelations. The new ligand is different from related cyclophosphazene ligands derived from (4-oxyphenyl)diphenylphosphine in having ortho position of pendant phosphine to the phenoxy linker rather than para. It was found that there was no direct interactions between the gold(I) center and the tetrafluoroborate anion. The results show that short contacts between Au(I) and the oxygen atoms occurs in the (2-oxyphenyl)diphosphine hinges.

Reacting 2,4-bis(phenyl)-1,3-diselenadiphosphetane-2,4-diselenide [{PhP(Se)(mu-Se)}2], Woollins’ reagent, with an equivalent of aromatic diol in refluxing toluene afforded 10-membered phosphorus-selenium heterocycles 1 and 2 with an O-P(Se)-Se-Se-P(Se)-O linkage. Two equivalents of aromatic diol and Woollins’ reagent in refluxing toluene gave seven-membered phosphorus-selenium heterocycles 3 and 4 with an O-P(Se)-O linkage together with 10-membered phosphorus-selenium heterocycles 1 and 2. It was also found that the diphosphorus species O-P(Se)-Se-Se-P(Se)-O rings 1 and 2 could be readily ring contracted into the monophosphorus rings 3 and 4 in almost quantitative yields via further reaction with another equivalent of corresponding aromatic diol. One representative X-ray structure is reported.

The interaction of 5,5?-dibromophenyl-17-crown-5 with triisopropylphosphite (NiBr2 catalysis) was employed to prepare 5,5?-bis(di-iso-propoxyphosphoryl)biphenyl-17-crown-5, its molecular structure (X-ray crystallography) being compared with the data for the unsubstituted biphenyl-17-crown-5 and an acyclic analog 2,2?-dimethoxy-5, 5?-bis(di-iso-propoxyphosphoryl)biphenyl. For both crown-ethers the macrocycle shape in the crystal state is defined by mutual rotation of the benzene rings, whilst bulky isopropoxyphosphoryl groups in the 5(5?) positions gave little influence on the dihedral angle made by the aromatic cycles. The P=O bonds of these groups are pointing into opposite directions and are virtually parallel to the benzene ring planes. The 2,2?-oxygen atoms of the biphenyl fragment have the gauche orientation in all compounds studied.

The compound of this invention is a useful catalyst for the oxidative coupling of naphthol. Its originality lies in that it is a novel vanadium complex of Schiff’s base formed by a chiral amino acid and a formyl biphenol or its derivative. Its axis chirality is induced to form by the chiral amino acid. It has the general formula: where R represents a benzyl, an isopropyl, an isobutyl or a tertiary butyl and the configuration of the amino acid is R or S. The compound can catalyze oxidative coupling of naphthol or its derivative to form binaphthol or its derivatives with a high optical purity.
