The use of phenolic compounds as organocatalysts is discussed in the context of the atom-efficient cycloaddition of carbon dioxide to epoxides, forming useful cyclic organic carbonate products. The presence and cooperative nature of adjacent phenolic groups in the catalyst structure results in significantly enhanced catalytic efficiencies, allowing these CO2 fixation reactions to operate efficiently under virtually ambient conditions. The cooperative effect has also been studied by computational methods. Furthermore, when the cycloaddition reactions are carried out on a larger scale and under solvent-free conditions, further enhancements in activity are observed, combined with the advantageous requirement of reduced loadings of the binary organocatalyst system. The reported system is among one of the mildest and most effective metal-free catalysts for this conversion and contributes to a much more sustainable development of organic carbonate production; this feature has not been the main focus of previous contributions in this area. In a fix: A new organocatalytic method for organic carbonate synthesis is reported and allows attractive conditions (25 C, 10 bar, no solvent) to be used (see picture). Cyclic carbonates produced from CO2 and epoxides are isolated in high yields. The mild nature of this process increases the overall process sustainability for this type of widely studied carbon dioxide fixation process.

Herein we report on structural, morphological, and optical properties of homochiral and heterochiral J-aggregates that were created by nucleation-elongation assembly of atropo-enantiomerically pure and racemic perylene bisimides (PBIs), respectively. Our detailed studies with conformationally stable biphenoxy-bridged chiral PBIs by UV/Vis absorption, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed structurally as well as spectroscopically quite different kinds of J-aggregates for enantiomerically pure and racemic PBIs. AFM investigations showed that enantiopure PBIs form helical nanowires of unique diameter and large length-to-width ratio by self-recognition, while racemic PBIs provide irregular-sized particles by self-discrimination of the enantiomers at the stage of nucleation. Steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy studies revealed that the photoluminescence efficiency of homochiral J-aggregated nanowires (47±3%) is significantly higher than that of heterochiral J-aggregated particle-like aggregates (12±3%), which is explained in terms of highly ordered molecular stacking in one-dimensional nanowires of homochiral J-aggregates. Our present results demonstrate the high impact of homochirality on the construction of well-defined nanostructures with unique optical properties.

In the present work, extensive hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) studies with a commercial sulfided CoMo/Al2O3 catalyst were performed on a library of lignin model compounds at 50 bar hydrogen pressure and 300 C in dodecane, using a batch autoclave system. The catalyst was activated under hydrogen atmosphere prior to the reaction, and the spent catalyst was analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis. An extended reaction network is proposed, showing that HDO, demethylation, and hydrogenation reactions take place simultaneously. HDO of mono-oxygenated substrates proved to be difficult at the applied conditions. Starting from most positions in the network, phenol, and cresols are therefore the main final products, suggesting the possibility of convergence on a limited number of products from a mixture of substrates. HDO of dimeric model compounds mimicking typical lignin linkages revealed that coumaran alkyl ethers and beta-O-4 bonds can be broken, but 5-5? linkages not.

Ring-expansion polymerizations of l-lactide are mainly studied at 160 or 180 C. The reactivity of the catalysts increases in the order: Zr < Ge < Sn. Regardless of catalyst, the weight-average molecular weights (Mw) never exceed 50,000 g mol?1. The resulting poly(l-lactide)s are optically pure and have a cyclic architecture. Decreasing temperature and time favor formation of even-numbered cycles, and at 102 cyclics, almost free of odd-numbered rings are obtained. Analogous polymerizations of meso-lactide give similar results >120 C, but different results at 100 or 80 C. Surprisingly, bell-shaped narrow molecular weight distributions are obtained <140 C, resembling the pattern of living polymerizations found for alcohol-initiated polymerizations. An unusual transesterification mechanism yielding narrow distributions of odd-numbered cycles is discovered too. The C/Si switch strategy has been regarded as a useful and efficient strategy for the discovery of drugs and materials. Thus, development of a methodology to access diverse silacycles is of great significance and in great demand. Among these, C-H bond silylation provides a powerful and straightforward synthetic method to form diverse silacycles in an atom- and step-economical fashion. However, C-H bond silylation has not been used to access any six-membered silicon-bridged pi-conjugated scaffolds and enantioselective six-membered C-H silylation has never been presented. Herein, we successfully accessed diverse six-membered pi-conjugated dibenzooxasilines via C-H bond silylation and investigated their photophysical properties. Furthermore, we realized enantioselective six-membered C-H siylation to directly afford planar chiral metallocene oxasilolanes with high ee (up to 95% ee). We also demonstrated the synthetic usefulness of dibenzooxasilines and planar chiral metallocene-fused benzooxasilolines as valuable synthetic intermediates via diverse additional transformations. Moreover, six-membered silicon-bridged ladder pi-conjugated systems were designed and rapidly constructed by using our methods. The “isomerization” and “silicon” effects on molecular geometries and photophysical properties were also evaluated in detail.

Polymeric/oligomeric and macrocyclic (salophen)Ni(II) complexes have been synthesized starting from both an achiral biphenol dialdehyde and an optically active BINOL dialdehyde. It was found that these polysalophens contain nonplanar coordination of Ni(II) units that are paramagnetic. This is different from the previously reported (salophen)Ni(II) complexes which are square planar and diamagnetic. The nonplanar (salophen)Ni(II) units make the new polymeric Ni(II) complexes different from the helical structure proposed for chiral biaryl-based polymers containing squareplanar (salophen)Ni(II) units. The copolymerization of the chiral binaphthyl monomer with the achiral biphenyl mofiomer demonstrates that the chirality of the binaphthyl unit is not propagated along the biphenyl polymer chain.

Asymmetric catalysis of chiral spiroborate esters with an O3BN framework toward the direct aldol reaction of acetone and aromatic aldehydes was examined, and a new, efficient chiral catalyst was discovered.
