MACROHETEROCYCLES. VIII. SYNTHESIS AND COMPLEXING ABILITY OF TRICARBONYL ANALOGS OF CROWN ETHERS

The respective dicarboxylic acids were obtained by the reaction of glycolic, beta-phenyllactic, and thioglycolic acids with diglycolic anhydride.Thirteen new macrocyclic esters were obtained by the reaction of the chlorides of these acids with polyethylene glycols under the conditions of high dilution. The stability constants of the complexes of these compounds with potassium and sodium cations in alcohol were determined by a polarographic method. It was established that certain crown ether triones exhibit appresiable sodium/potassium selectivity.

Ethene polymerization behavior of MAO-Activated dichloridotitanium complexes bearing Bi- and tetradentate salicylaldimine derivatives

New chiral bridged tetradentate (N2O2)Ti IVCl2-type complexes bearing dimethylbiphenyl (1-Ti-3-Ti) and previously published, binaphthyl-bridged (4-Ti) complex were synthesized, with high, yields. This was achieved by treating the corresponding Schiff-base ligand (H2L) precursors with Ti(NMe2)4, followed by conversion of these diamido complexes to LTiCl2 derivatives by the addition of excess of Me3SiCl. A. series of unbridged titanium, complexes S-Ti-8-Ti with similar substituents at the phenoxy group were studied and their polymerization properties, after methylaluminoxane (MAO) activation, compared with the above bridged complexes. It was found that the catalysts bearing chiral tetradentate biaryl-bridged salicylaldimine ligands produce multimodal polyethylene (PE) with low activity [below 1.0 kgPE/ (molTihbar)] while their unbridged analogues provide activities that are 10-1000 times greater under similar reaction conditions. The reasons for this dramatic difference in polymerization activities are discussed based, on the stabilities of the different cationic species configurations.

Hydrogen Peroxide Coordination to Cobalt(II) Facilitated by Second-Sphere Hydrogen Bonding

M(H2O2) adducts have been postulated as intermediates in biological and industrial processes; however, only one observable M(H2O2) adduct has been reported, where M is redox-inactive zinc. Herein, direct solution-phase detection of an M(H2O2) adduct with a redox-active metal, cobalt(II), is described. This CoII(H2O2) compound is made observable by incorporating second-sphere hydrogen-bonding interactions between bound H2O2and the supporting ligand, a trianionic trisulfonamido ligand. Thermodynamics of H2O2binding and decay kinetics of the CoII(H2O2) species are described, as well as the reaction of this CoII(H2O2) species with Group 2 cations.

Imine Protonation in Toluene Solution: A Problem Akin to the N-Protonation in Rhodopsin

The protonation state of N-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-2-indanylidene)methylamine (5/6) is assessed on the basis of fully assigned 1H- and 13 C-NMR spectra in toluene and in CDCl3.In either solvent the basicity of 5 remains intermediate between those of pyridine (weaker) and triethylamine (stronger).Nearly complete proton transfer to 5 in toluene occurs with trifluoroacetic and dichloroacetic acids, whereas partial protonation is achieved by chloroacetic acid or acetic acid and even by biphenyl-2,2′-diol (7).As a possible model for imine protonation in the hydrophobic region of proteins like the rhodopsins, the sterically shielded iminium cation 6 (or 2) does not require solvation by a polar solvent; rather it can be stabilized in toluene solution by a counteranion whose proton affinity is diminished by an assisting hydrogen bond. – Key Words: Basicity/ Imine protonation/ Solvent effect/ Steric shielding

Copper(II) complexes of thioether-substituted salcyen and salcyan derivatives and their silver(I) adducts

New syntheses are reported of 5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-3- methylsulfanylbenzaldehyde, 5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-3-phenylsulfanyl- benzaldehyde, and salcyen (H2L1-H2L 3) and salcyan (H2L4-H2L 6)-type ligands derived from these aldehydes and from 5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The complexes [CuL] (L2- = [L1]2–[L6]2-) bearing sulfanyl substituents each show two distinct voltammetric ligand-based oxidations under the same conditions, the first of which is chemically reversible. The first oxidation product is much longer lived by coulometry for the salcyen than for the salcyan ligand complexes, despite the latter having a substantially lower oxidation potential. The lifetimes of all the ligand oxidation products in this system are substantially smaller than for similar compounds derived from 3,5-di(tert-butyl)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (Dalton Trans., 2004, 2662). Attempted chemical oxidation of the Schiff base compounds using AgBF4 yielded instead stable silver(I) adducts. A crystal structure of one such compound showed that the Ag atom was coordinated in a slightly bent geometry by the two ligand sulfanyl groups, with two additional long-range Ag … O interactions to the phenoxide donors. EPR spectra showed that some of these silver adducts dimerise in CH2Cl2, probably through basal, apical intermolecular Cu-O … Cu bridging. In contrast the parent copper(II) complexes are all monomeric in this solvent by EPR. The Royal Society of Chemistry 2005.

Ni-Catalyzed Alkenylation of Ketone Enolates under Mild Conditions: Catalyst Identification and Optimization

A procedure for Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling of ketone enolates with alkenyl halides has been developed. Intermolecular coupling of aromatic and aliphatic ketone lithium enolates with a variety of alkenyl halides is achieved in the presence of Ni(cod)2 catalyst (5 mol %), an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand, and LiI (10 mol %) at 6-22 C for 0.5-12 h with yields of up to 90%. During the initial development of this reaction, a misleading result with respect to the actual active catalyst was obtained using commercially available Q-Phos ligand, which was found to contain a trace of Pd metal contaminant sufficient to catalyze the reaction. However, under the final conditions optimized for Ni(cod)2 in the presence of an NHC ligand, Pd was incompetent as a catalyst.
