Two new square pyramidal iron(III)-complexes of ?salen?-type Schiff base ligands containing 4-substituted long alkoxy arms on the aromatic rings, [Fe(4-C16H33O)2salcn)]Cl and [Fe(4-C16H33O)2salophen)]Cl {salcn = N,N?-cyclohexanebis(salicylideneiminato) and salophen = N,N?-phenylenebis(salicylideneiminato)}, have been successfully synthesised, and their mesomorphic property investigated. The ligands and complexes were characterised by elemental analyses, UV?Vis, FT-IR, ESI?MS, 1H and 13C NMR (for ligands only). The phase behaviour of the iron(III) complexes were ascertained by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and variable temperature PXRD study. Ligands are non-mesomorphic, however, mesomorphism got induced upon complexation with the iron(III) centre. X-ray diffraction study revealed a layer-like arrangement of the five coordinated mesomorphic iron(III) complexes. The mesophase is stable over a wide range of temperature. The density functional theory calculations were carried out using Gaussian 09 program at B3LYP level using unrestricted 6?31G (d, p) basis set to obtain the optimised geometry of the iron(III) complexes.

MRI contrast agents providing very high relaxivity values can be obtained through the attachment of multiple gadolinium(III) complexes to the interior surfaces of genome-free viral capsids. Six alkali metal tris(HMDS) magnesiate complexes (HMDS, 1,1,1,3,3,3,-hexamethyldisilazide) containing chiral diamine ligands have been prepared and characterised in both the solid- and solution-state. Four of the complexes have a solvent-separated ion pair composition of the form [{M·(chiral diamine)2}+{Mg(HMDS)3} -] [M = Li for 1 and 3, Na for 2 and 4; chiral diamine = (-)-sparteine for 1 and 2, (R,R)-TMCDA for 3 and 4, (where (R,R)-TMCDA is N,N,N?,N?-(1R,2R)-tetramethylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine)] and two have a contacted ion pair composition of the form [{K·chiral diamine} +{Mg(HMDS)3}-]n [chiral diamine = (-)-sparteine for 5 and (R,R)-TMCDA for 6]. In the solid-state, complexes 1-4 are essentially isostructural, with the lithium or sodium cation sequestered by the respective chiral diamine and the previously reported anion consisting of three HMDS ligands coordinated to a magnesium centre. As such, complexes 1-4 are the first structurally characterised complexes in which the alkali metal is sequestered by two molecules of either of the chiral diamines (-)-sparteine (1 and 2) or (R,R)-TMCDA (3 and 4). In addition, complex 4 is a rare (R,R)-TMCDA adduct of sodium. In the solid state, complexes 5 and 6 exist as polymeric arrays of dimeric [{K·chiral diamine}+{Mg(HMDS) 3}-]2 subunits, with 5 adopting a two-dimensional net arrangement and 6 a linear arrangement. As such, complexes 5 and 6 appear to be the only structurally characterised complexes in which the chiral diamines (-)-sparteine (5) or (R,R)-TMCDA (6) have been incorporated within a polymeric framework. In addition, prior to this work, no (-)-sparteine or (R,R)-TMCDA adducts of potassium had been reported.

New chiral macrocyclic cobalt(III) salen complexes were synthesized and used as catalyst for the asymmetric kinetic resolution (AKR) of terminal epoxides and glycidyl ethers with aromatic/aliphatic amines and water as nucleophiles. This is the first occasion where a Co(III) salen complex demonstrated its ability to catalyze AKR as well as hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) reactions. Excellent enantiomeric excesses of the epoxides, the corresponding amino alcohols and diols (upto 99%) with quantitative yields were achieved by using the chiral Co(III) salen complexes in dichloromethane at room temperature. This protocol was further extended for the synthesis of two important drug molecules, i.e., (S)-propranolol and (R)-naftopidil. The catalytic system was also explored for the synthesis of chirally pure diols and chiral cyclic carbonates using carbon dioxide as a greener renewable C1 source. The catalyst was recycled for upto 5 catalytic cycles with retention of enantioselectivity. (Figure presented.).

An improved method for the synthesis of formyl derivatives of N – Methylbenzoazacrown ethers is proposed. They are prepared in up to 68% yields over fewer steps and with a much shorter time required for the last step. The stability constants of complexes formed by N-methylbenzoazacrown ethers and their structural analogs with alkali metal, alkaline – Earth metal and ammonium cations were determined by 1H NMR titration in CD3CN. High stability of complexes of N-methyl derivatives of benzoazacrown ethers is demonstrated, comparable with or even exceeding the stability of benzocrown-ether complexes and markedly exceeding the stability of complexes of phenylazacrown ethers with the same macrocycle size. The structures of azacrown ethers and their complexes with Ba(ClO4)2 were studied by X-ray diffraction. A high degree of pre-organization of N – Methylbenzoazacrown ethers toward the formation of complexes with metal and ammonium cations was noted, which is due to the clear-cut pyramidal geometry of the nitrogen atom and the orientation of the lone electron pairs (LEPs) of most heteroatoms towards the centre of the macroheterocycle.
