We have designed and synthesized a series of organic wide bandgap materials, namely DCzSiCz, DDCzSi and DTCzSi, by incorporating carbazole/oligocarbazoles via a silicon-bridged linkage mode. All the materials show good thermal stability and excellent solution-processibility. Their HOMOs and LUMOs could be tuned to facilitate the efficient carriers injection by the incorporated carbazole/oligocarbazoles, while their singlet and triplet energy levels still maintain high levels, all above 3.44 eV and 2.87 eV, respectively. High efficient blue electrophosphorescent devices with low turn-on voltage are realized using DCzSiCz, DDCzSi and DTCzSi as hosts for FIrpic through solution-processable method. Among them, DCzSiCz-based device demonstrates the best performance, showing a maximum brightness of 6600 cd m-2 at 11 V and maximum luminous efficiency of 8.40 cd A-1 at 5 V.

Two new oxazolines (3 and 4) and their copper complexes (5 and 6) were synthesized. The four compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and 1H-NMR, IR, MS spectrometry. The molecular structure of compound 6 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The four coordinate atoms [N(1), N(2), O(2), O(4)] and the central metal atom (Cu) form a saddle configuration. Compounds 5 and 6 were found to be moderately effective in the catalytic asymmetric Baeyer-Villiger reaction of 2-phenylcyclohexanone.

Phosphoramides and thiophosphoramides were prepared from optically pure C2-symmetric 1,2-diamines and were used as chiral organocatalysts in the asymmetric Michael additions of aldehydes and ketones to N-substituted maleimides. The 1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-diamine derived thiophosphoramide, which could be prepared in good yield in a one-step procedure, was found to be more active and selective catalyst in the addition of aldehydes to various maleimide derivatives, when compared to sulfonamides having the same backbone. Products resulted in reactions of ketones with maleimides were also obtained in high yields and enantioselectivities. The thiophosphoramide derivative was also efficient in the asymmetric conjugate addition of carbonyl compounds to beta-nitrostyrene and in the reaction of nitromethane with alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Based on results obtained with (thio)phosphoramides in asymmetric additions to maleimides it was suggested that a weaker, more flexible hydrogen-bonding of the rigid electrophile to the catalyst is responsible for the improved performance of these bifunctional organocatalysts, as compared with sulfonamides. We present a novel methodology for the asymmetric synthesis of beta-mercaptolactones via isomerization of omega-hydroxy-alpha,beta- unsaturated thioesters by means of a bifunctional aminothiourea catalyst. The catalyst interacts with the substrate through the cooperative action of both a covalent bond at the amino group and noncovalent bonding at the thiourea group. The potential for an enantiodivergent synthesis could also be demonstrated by carrying out the reaction in a different solvent system.

From Concept to Crystals via Prediction: Multi-Component Organic Cage Pots by Social Self-Sorting

We describe the a priori computational prediction and realization of multi-component cage pots, starting with molecular predictions based on candidate precursors through to crystal structure prediction and synthesis using robotic screening. The molecules were formed by the social self-sorting of a tri-topic aldehyde with both a tri-topic amine and di-topic amine, without using orthogonal reactivity or precursors of the same topicity. Crystal structure prediction suggested a rich polymorphic landscape, where there was an overall preference for chiral recognition to form heterochiral rather than homochiral packings, with heterochiral pairs being more likely to pack window-to-window to form two-component capsules. These crystal packing preferences were then observed in experimental crystal structures.

Fermi-level-controlled semiconducting-separated carbon nanotube films for flexible terahertz imagers

Carbon-nanotube-related (CNT-related) materials and structures are highly anticipated as potential building blocks for future flexible electronics and photonics. Despite the various promising applications of CNT-related materials, one obstacle is the lack of ability to globally control and tune the Fermi level of microscale-thick CNT films because these films require a certain thickness to maintain their free-standing shape and freely bendable flexibility. In this work, we report on Fermi-level-controlled flexible and bendable terahertz (THz) imagers with chemically adjustable Fermi-level-tuning methods for CNT films. By utilizing the electronic-double-layer technique with ionic liquids, we obtained an on/off resistance ratio (2758) for a semiconducting-separated CNT film with a thickness of 30 mum and tuned the Fermi level at an optimal gate voltage to maximize the THz detector performance. In addition, the development of a gate-free tunable doping technology based on a variable-concentration dopant solution enabled the fabrication of a Fermi-level-tuned p-n junction CNT THz imager. The demonstrated chemically tunable doping capability will facilitate the realization of flexible THz imaging applications and, when combined with a low-cost fabrication method such as an inkjet coating process, will lead to large-area THz photonic devices.
