A series of anionic chromium(III) thiocyanato complexes with metal crown ether cations have been prepared and characterized. These complexes have the form [Crown-M]2+[Cr(NCS)5(H2O)] 2- and [Crown-M]3+[Cr(NCS)6]3-, where M=Na+, K+, or NH4+ and crown represents the crown ether. The crown ethers are 15-crown-5, B-15-crown-5, 18-crown-6, DB-18-crown-6, and DB-24-crown-8, where B- and DB- stand for benzo- and dibenzo-, respectively. The complexes are stable for at least 20 h in the dark in dimethylformamide(DMF) or in acetonitrile, and they release thiocyanate slowly, k=(0.71-2.67)×10-9 mol/(L s) in acetonitrile in the dark. Photoanation of thiocyanate was observed for the complexes in DMF and in acetonitrile. The quantum yields of thiocyanate release in DMF and in acetonitrile are reported. The quantum yields were in the range 0.05 to 0.52 mol einstein-1 and were solvent and wavelength dependent. In general, larger quantum yields were observed in DMF than in acetonitrile. The photoreaction mechanism is discussed.

A highly enantio- and diastereoselective synthesis of indolo- and benzoquinolizidine compounds has been developed through the formal aza-Diels-Alder reaction of enones with cyclic imines. This transformation is catalyzed by a new bifunctional primary aminothiourea that achieves simultaneous activation of both the enone and imine reaction components.

The transition-metal-catalyzed amination of aryl halides has been the most powerful method for the formation of aryl amines over the past decades. Phenols are regarded as ideal alternatives to aryl halides as coupling partners in cross-couplings. An efficient palladium-catalyzed formal cross-coupling of phenols with various amines and anilines has now been developed. A variety of substituted phenols were compatible with the standard reaction conditions. Secondary and tertiary aryl amines could thus be synthesized in moderate to excellent yields.

An aldehyde that is not fluorescent responsive toward a chiral diamine has been converted to a sensitive fluorescence enhancement sensor through incorporation of an additional hydrogen bonding unit to increase the structural rigidity of the reaction product of the aldehyde with the diamine. This new chiral aldehyde is synthesized in one step from the reaction of (S)-3-formylBINOL with salicyl chloride. When treated with trans-1,2-cyclohexanediamine in ethanol, it shows greatly enhanced fluorescence at lambda=410 nm with good enantioselectivity. NMR and mass spectroscopic methods are used to investigate the reaction of the chiral aldehyde with the diamine. This study has revealed a two-stage reaction mechanism including a fast imine formation and a slow ester cleavage. An aldehyde that is not fluorescent responsive toward a chiral diamine has been converted to a sensitive fluorescence enhancement sensor through incorporation of an additional hydrogen bonding unit, which increases the structural rigidity of the reaction product with the diamine and gives a large fluorescence enhancement. Highly enantioselective fluorescence recognition of 1,2-diaminocyclohexane with the new BINOL-based aldehyde has been achieved.

This paper describes the preparations and lithium-ion conductivities of various solid polymer electrolytes for potential use in high-energy density lithium-ion batteries. The ring opening polymerization of epoxides (M1-M6), catalyzed by Zn(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) complexes in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB), yielded polyethers (P1-P6) in which phosphates were attached as pendant groups. A reaction condition where Zn(II) catalyst used slightly excess to TBAB increased the polymerization rate remarkably and yielded the polyethers with higher molar masses in a short time. These polymerizations proceeded following a “monomer activated anionic ring opening polymerization” mechanism. These living like polymerizations also progressed according to “formation of polymer chain per initiator” model. The solid-state lithium-ion conductivities of these polymers were examined using lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). The conductivity of one of the solid polymer electrolytes with 40 wt% of LiTFSI was 5.2 × 10-5 S cm-1 at room temperature and 2.9 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 80 C.

The apparent molar volumes and adiabatic compressibilities of 18-Crown-6, 15-Crown-5, 12-Crown-4, tetraglyme, and triglyme were measured at 25C in H2O and D2O. The contribution of the -CH2CH2O- group to the limiting partial molar volumes and compressibilities of cyclic and open-chain ethers in both solvents are compared and solvent isotope effects calculated. It is concluded, based on the compressibility results, that there is a subtle difference between the hydration of the ethene oxide group in cyclic and open-chain ethers and that this difference persists in D2O. These results indicate that the calculation of limiting apparent molar compressibilities using additivity schemes will have to account for whether the group is in a cyclic or open-chain compound.

A soluble complexan polymer in organic solvents, derived from 1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N,N?,N?-tetraacetic acid (CyDTA), was synthesized and used as a polymer chelate precursor to YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films. Five complex an polymers (3) were prepared by a ring-opening polyaddition of CyDTA dianhydride (1) with several diamines (2). The polymer (3e) prepared with 1,2-diaminocyclohexane (2e) was soluble in water, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), methanol, and ethanol. A clear aqueous solution (pH 8) containing 3e and 1/2 equivalent molar amount of metal nitrates of Y, Ba, and Cu (1:2:3 in molar ratio) was poured into tetrahydrofurane (THF) to precipitate a polymer-metal chelate. The chelate formations of each metal were confirmed by C=O stretching bonds. The polymer chelate precursor was soluble in methanol, DMSO, and water, and partially soluble in ethanol. The polymer-metal chelate was dissolved in methanol, of which the metal concentration was adjusted to 3 wt%. This solution was spin-coated onto SrTiO3 (100) and MgO (001) substrates for preparing YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films. According to an X-ray diffraction analysis, YBa2Cu3O7-x film with a c-axis orientation was formed on a SrTiO3 substrate; even the precursor film was sintered at 780 C for 1 h under air. Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x films with a c-axis orientation were also prepared on a MgO (001) substrate.

Self-assembly of gold nanoparticles with crown ether derivatives at the liquid/liquid interface in the form of a stable nanocomposite film is reported. The metallic luster results from the electronic coupling of nanoparticles, suggesting the formation of closely-packed nanoparticle thin films. The interfacial film could be transferred to mica substrates and carbon-coated transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grids. The transferred films were very stable for prolonged time. The samples were characterized by UV-vis and IR spectroscopies, TEM, and thermogravimetric analysis. All the experimental results indicate the formation of nanoparticles monolayers at water/oil interfaces.
