Organic wide bandgap semiconductor is a hot research topic in optoelectronic fields. In this work, a series of diphenylether-, 9,9-biphenylfluorene- and tetraphenylsilane-centered wide bandgap materials are designed and synthesized. Comprehensive experiments and theoretical calculations are conducted to investigate their intrinsic thermal stability, photophysical property, electrochemical behavior and device performance, aiming at exploring the potentials of oxygen, sp3-hybridized carbon and silicon atoms for wide bandgap materials. They all can interrupt molecular conjugation to generate wide bandgaps. By modification of appropriate donor and acceptor, relatively high triplet energy level (ET) can be obtained in the resulting materials. Quantum chemical calculations indicate the sort of triplet energy levels of N-carbazole > fluorene > benzonitrile, which fully supports the experimental results. Tetraphenylsilane-based materials display lower LUMO levels than corresponding diphenylether- and 9,9-biphenylfluorene-centered materials owing to the dpi-ppi conjugation. Among them, DCzSiPy/FIrpic doped device gives the best device performance with maximum current efficiency of 35.6 cd/A and maximum external quantum efficiency of 16.8%, demonstrating the superiority of tetraphenylsilane skeleton. 9,9-Biphenylfluorene-based doped devices have comparable efficiencies with tetraphenylsilane-hosted ones, meaning 9,9-biphenylfluorene unit also can be a good constructing skeleton for wide bandgap host materials.

The structure-activity relationships of bisquinolines, a potentially important group of novel antimalarial drugs, were studied. The high-temperature (180-250C) synthesis of 4-aminoquinolines, including bisquinolines, by nucleophilic displacement was both fast and efficient. Several bisquinolines including (±)-trans-N1,N2-bis(7-trifluoroquinolin-4-yl) cyclohexane-1,2-diamine and 1R,2R-(-)-, 1S,2S-(+)-, (±)-trans- and cis-N1,N2-bis(7-chloroquinolin-4-yl)cyclohexane-1,2-diamine exhibited potent activity against Plasmodium berghei in mice; (+)-trans-N1,N2-bis(7-chloroquinolin-4-yl)cyclohexane-1,2-diamine was orally active. Our results indicate that these compounds conform to a putative receptor for quinoline antimalarials. In addition, a 7-haloquinoline linked by a heterocyclic bridge, at the 4-position, to another heterocycle (such as an acridine at the 9-position) maximally occupies the active site of our postulated target.

In view of the need to develop new drugs against human African trypanosomiasis, a series of naturally occurring naphthylisoquinoline alkaloids, axially chiral acetogenic products derived from tropical plants, have been investigated for their activity against Trypanosoma brucei brucei TC 221. Likewise compounds corresponding to the two molecular portions, the naphthalene and the isoquinoline parts were tested, as well as molecules related to the central biaryl core of the alkaloids. Among all compounds tested, the natural, genuine alkaloids themselves, in particular dioncophylline B with its biaryl system and a moderate number of free hydroxy functions, showed the highest activities. Our results demonstrate that naphthylisoquinoline alkaloids constitute an interesting novel class of antitrypanosomal compounds worth further optimization.

A highly efficient organocatalytic method for the asymmetric Michael addition of alpha-substituted cyanoacetates to vinyl sulfones was investigated. The trans-1,2-bis(amido)cyclohexane (trans-BAC) has been identified as a supramolecular motif with strong homochiral recognition to direct this chirality controlled assembly process of enantiomers in solution. Stereoselective supramolecular polymerization of trans-BAC appended naphthalene diimide monomers (NDIs) has been probed in detail by spectroscopic and mechanistic investigations. This chirality-driven self-sorting design of enantiomeric components also offers to realize mixed and segregated D-A stacks by supramolecular co-assembly of the NDI acceptors with trans-BAC appended dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN) donor monomers. Such an unprecedented chirality control on D-A organization paves the way for the creation of supramolecular p-n nanostructures with controlled molecular-level organization. Chiral stacking: A chirality-driven self-sorting strategy has been introduced for the construction of mixed and segregated donor-acceptor supramolecular arrays in solution.

Linked bis(beta-diketiminato) rare-earth metal complexes based on the ethylene-bridged ligand [C2H4(BDIDClP) 2]H2 [DClP = 2,6-Cl2C6H3] and the cyclohexyl-bridged ligands [Cy(BDIAr)2]H 2 [Ar = PMP (= p-MeOC6H4), Mes (= 2,4,6-Me 3C6H2), DIPP (= 2,6-iPr2C 6H3)] were prepared via amine elimination starting from [Ln{N(SiMe3)2}3] (Ln = La, Y). The three cyclohexyl-bridged complexes [{(R,R)-Cy(BDIMes)2} YN(SiMe3)2] ((R,R)-3), [{(R,R)-Cy(BDIMes) 2}LaN(SiMe3)2] ((R,R)-4), and [{(R,R)-Cy(BDIDIPP)2}LaN(SiMe3)2] ((R,R)-5) were obtained enantiomerically pure. The X-ray crystal structure analysis of the racemic variants of 3 and 4 revealed a distorted square pyramidal coordination geometry around the rare-earth metal, in which the amido ligand occupies the apical position and the two linked beta-diketiminato moieties form the basis. The two aromatic substituents adopt a transoid arrangement and both beta-diketiminato moieties are bound in a eta5 coordination mode with close Ln?C contacts. Due to the smaller ionic radius of yttrium vs. lanthanum, the front side of the yttrium complex 3 is sterically more hindered than in the lanthanum complex 4, but there is much more empty coordination space on the rear side, which may rationalize the observed differences in selectivity of 3 in comparison to 4. The catalytic efficiency of the beta-diketiminato complexes was strongly affected by steric factors such as ionic radius of the metal and the steric bulk of the aryl substituents, which is an indication for highly steric encumbered catalytic species. The complexes displayed good to moderate catalytic activity in the hydroamination/cyclization of aminoalkenes depending on the steric hindrance around the metal center. The sterically most demanding diisopropylphenyl- substituted complex (R,R)-5 displayed significantly higher enantioselectivities (up to 76% ee), but lower catalytic activity in comparison to the sterically more open mesityl-substituted complex (R,R)-4. The smaller yttrium metal center in complex (R,R)-3 led to reduced activity as well as a reversal in enantioselectivity, which may be rationalized by a change of the approach of the alkene moiety to the Ln-amido bond in the cyclization transition state.
