Chiral photomagnets compose a class of multifunctional molecule-based materials with light-induced alteration of magnetization and chiral properties. The rational design and synthesis of such assemblies is a challenge, and only few such systems are known. Herein, the remarkable octacyanide-bridged enantiomeric pair of 1-D chains [Cu((R,R)-chxn)2]2[Mo(CN)8]·H2O (1R) and [Cu((S,S)-chxn)2]2[Mo(CN)8]·H2O (1S) exhibiting enantiopure structural helicity, which results in optical activity in the 350-800 nm range as confirmed by natural circular dichroism (NCD) spectra, is reported. The photomagnetic effects of 1R, 1S, and 1rac result from the blue light excitation (436 nm) of the photomagnetically active octacyanidomolybdate(IV) ions. In the excited state MoIVHS centers with S = 1 couple antiferromagnetically with the neighboring CuII centers with JCuMo values of -1.3, -1.0, and -1.1 cm-1 for 1R, 1S, and 1rac, respectively. The values of thermal relaxation energy barriers have been estimated as 142 and 356 K for 1R and 1S, being comparable with the energy range of the thermal bath. The value for 1rac reveals a significantly lower value of 75 K. On the basis of these results the value of gMoHS has been estimated to be in the range 4.8-5.8.

A new spirocyclophosphazene, 2,2-bis(2-formylphenoxy)-4,4,6,6- bis[spiro(2?,2?-dioxy-1?-1?-biphenylyl)] -cyclotriphosphazene (3), was obtained from the reaction of 2,2-dichloro-4,4,6, 6-bis[spiro(2?,2?-dioxy-1?-1?-biphenylyl)] cyclotriphosphazene (2) with 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde. New phosphazene derivatives bearing Schiff base and dioxybiphenyl groups have been synthesized by the reactions of 3 with different amines. The structures of the compounds were defined by elemental analysis, IR, 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopy. All the synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity against both types of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The most potent antibacterial compound of this series was compound 12 which has the low MIC value of 3.75-0.9375 mug/mL. Both minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and inhibition zones were determined in order to monitor the efficacy of the synthesized compounds. New compounds were also screened for anticonvulsant, CNS depressant, and sedative-hypnotic activity. After i.p. injection to mice at doses of 30, 100, and 300 mg/kg body weight phosphazenes were examined in the maximal electroshock-induced seizure (MES) and subcutaneous pentylenetetrazole (scPTZ) induced seizure models in mice. The neurotoxicity was assessed using the rotorod method. Compounds 4, 5, and 11 were found to be active in both MES screen and scPTZ screen at 0.5 h. All except 12 showed more than 44% decrease in locomotor activity after 1 h of compound administration via actophotometer screen. CNS-depressant activity screened with the help of the forced swim method resulted in some potent compounds. Except for 7 and 12 other tested compounds were found to exhibit potent CNS depressants activity as indicated by increased immobility time.

(R)-1/(S)-1 and the corresponding zinc(II) complexes (R)-2/(S)-2 were prepared as chiral host molecules, and their utility for chiral analyses (especially enantiomeric excess (ee) determinations) were evaluated. Tris(1-n-dodecyl)porphyrins were used for the first time as the interacting units. Host capabilities of the diporphyrin tweezers were investigated by titrations with (R,R)- and (S,S)-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine (CHDA). The host molecules could be used as multichannel probes of ee by using UV-vis, circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence emission and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) methods. Chiral configurations could also be differentiated using CD or 1H-NMR spectroscopy. All three optical techniques give good resolution of ee with reasonable sensitivity considering the low concentrations used (ca. 10?6 mol·L?1). The ee determination of CHDA enantiomers using NMR spectroscopy is also possible because of the reasonably well separated resonances in the case of (R,R)- and (S,S)-CHDA. Non-metallated (R)-1/(S)-1 hosts could not be used to detect chiral information in a strongly acidic chiral guest. This work demonstrates the utility of 1,1?-binapthyl-linked chiral hosts for chiral analysis of ditopically interacting enantiomers. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

A new type of ionic ferroelectric based on a chiral salen-type Schiff base erbium(III) complex (ErL) was synthesized by the reaction of erbium nitrate with the ligand N,N?-bis(3,5-dichlorosalicylidene)-(1S,2S)-1,2-cyclohexylenediamine (L). The structures of the ligand L and the complex ErL were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that ErIII not only acts as central metal atom to coordinate with two Schiff base ligands, but also as Lewis acid catalyst to promote the partial decomposition of another salen-type Schiff base ligand. The central ErIII atom adopts an octacoordinate square antiprismatic arrangement with Lambda absolute configuration, coordinating with all nitrogen and oxygen atoms of two ligands due to the influence of the strong electron-withdrawing group on the Schiff base ligand. The complex ErL exhibits good SHG and ferroelectric properties. The results provide a simple and effective approach to construct rare earth complexes coordinated with nitrogen and oxygen atoms of salen-type Schiff base ligands with technologically important properties such as SHG activity and ferroelectricity.
