The preparation of new chiral amino alcohols that possess a flexible biphenylazepine moiety and can work as tropos catalysts, is presented. In these compounds, the sign of the induced axial chirality depends on the nature of stereogenic centers near the flexible fragment and can determine the stereochemical outcome in asymmetric reactions mediated by them. The efficiency of these new ligands has been explored in the asymmetric addition of arylzinc species prepared in situ to aromatic aldehydes. Among them, amino alcohol (1R,2S)-4 gave the best results and afforded optically active diarymethanols, which are precursors of well-known chiral drugs, in high yields and with enantioselectivity up to 96 %.

Supercritical liquefaction process is used for producing energy from biomass. The common reaction conditions for supercritical liquefaction process are the 240-380 C temperature range and 5-20 MPa pressure values range. Xanthium strumarium liquefaction experiments were performed in a cylindrical reactor (75 mL) in organic solvents (acetone, ethanol, methanol) under supercritical conditions with (zinc oxide, calcium hydroxide) and without catalyst at the temperatures of 250, 275 and 300 C. The produced liquids at 300 C in liquefaction were analyzed and characterized by Elemental, GC-MS and FT-IR. 36, 37 and 50 different types of compounds were identified by GC-MS obtained in acetone, ethanol and methanol respectively. The liquid product efficiency has been obtained at 300 C in acetone with zinc oxide catalyst (74.80%). The highest HHV value has been calculated as 32.16 MJ/kg with calcium hydroxide catalyst in acetone.

When R1 = Et and R2 = NO2 the best enantiomeric excesses of 58 and 43% were found for epoxidation of cis-beta-methylstyrene to (1S,2R)-cis-beta-methylstyrene oxide and 4-chlorostyrene to 4-(S)-chlorostyrene oxide respectively.

The studies described herein focus on the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between first-row transition metal-azide complexes and alkyne reagents, i.e. an inorganic variant of the extensively used “click reaction”. The reaction between the azide complexes of biologically-relevant metals (e.g., Fe, Co and Ni) found in metalloenzyme active sites and alkyne reagents has been investigated as a proof-of-principle for a novel method of developing metalloenzyme triazole-based inhibitors. Six Fe, Co and Ni mono-azide complexes employing salen- and cyclam-type ligands have been synthesized and characterized. The scope of the targeted inorganic azide-alkyne click reaction was investigated using the electron-deficient alkyne dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate. Of the six metal-azide complexes tested, the Co and Ni complexes of the 1,4,8,11-tetrametyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (Me 4cyclam) ligand showed a successful cycloaddition reaction and formation of the corresponding metal-triazolate products, which were crystallographically characterized. Moreover, use of less electron deficient alkynes resulted in a loss of cycloaddition reactivity. Analysis of the structural parameters of the investigated metal-azide complexes suggests that a more symmetric structure and charge distribution within the azide moiety is needed for the formation of a metal-triazolate product. Overall, these results suggest that a successful cycloaddition reaction between a metal-azide complex and an alkyne substrate is dependent both on the ligand and metal oxidation state, that determine the electronic properties of the bound azide, as well as the electron deficient nature of the alkyne employed.

Inorganic anions were identified by using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Derivatization of the anions was achieved with pentafluorobenzyl p-toluenesulphonate (PFB-Tos) as the reaction reagent and a crown ether as a phase transfer catalyst. When PFB-Br was used as the reaction regent, the retention time of it was close to those of the derivatized inorganic anions and interfered with the analysis. In contrast, the retention time of PFB-Tos differed greatly from the PFB derivatives of the inorganic anions and the compounds of interest could be detected without interference. Although the PFB derivatives of SO4, S2O3, CO3, ClO4, and ClO3 could not be detected, the derivatives of F, Cl, Br, I, CN, OCN, SCN, N3, NO3, and NO2 were detected using PFB-Tos as the derivatizing reagent. The inorganic anions were detectable within 30 ng approximately, which is of sufficient sensitivity for use in forensic chemistry. Accurate mass number was measured for each PFB derivative by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) within a measurement error of 2 millimass units (mmu), which allowed determination of the compositional formula from the mass number. In addition, actual analysis was performed successively by our method using trial samples of matrix.

Aprotic alkali metal-oxygen batteries are promising high specific energy alternatives to Li-ion batteries. Growth and dissolution of alkali metal oxides such as Li2O2 in Li-O2 batteries and NaO2 and KO2 in Na-O2 and K-O2 batteries, respectively, are central to the discharge and charge processes in these batteries. However, crystal growth and dissolution of the discharge products is poorly understood, especially in aprotic electrolytes. In this work, we chose the growth of NaO2 in Na-O2 batteries as a model system and show a strong correlation between the electrolyte salt concentration and the NaO2 crystal size. With a combination of experiments and theory, we argue that the correlation is a direct manifestation of the strong cation-anion interactions, leading to decreased crystal growth rate at high salt concentrations. Furthermore, we propose and experimentally demonstrate that cation-coordinating crown molecules are electrochemically stable electrolyte additives that weaken ion pairing and enhance discharge capacities in metal-oxygen batteries.
